OFFIE AWARD WINNER FOR BEST NEW MUSICAL 2023
LA MAUPIN
HAVE A LISTEN...
‘this is undoubtably a five star show that will dazzle and delight a whole new audience. If only all musicals were this totally bonkers, maybe I would reconsider my belief that they should be banished from existence.’
EVERYTHING THEATRE
‘you might not know much about Julie going in, but you’ll certainly know her by the time you leave, humming any one of the seriously catchy choruses ...and wanting to immediately know more about this fascinating, trailblazing woman who history for some reason has decided isn’t worth our time’
THEATRE THINGS
‘The marriage of punk-inspired original music, with this time and place, is inspired and works brilliantly....an eye-watering spectacular of music, fun, gossip, comedy and a rollicking night out’
LONDON PUB THEATRE
‘There’s a cracking sense of musical identity at work here…folk-inspired melodies that sound like they’ve been sung in Irish pubs for decades and so often leaving you wanting to hear them again..Thompson’s writing also does an excellent job in speaking to the moment with a skilfully light but still considered touch’
THERE OUGHT TO BE CLOWNS
Julie d'Aubigny was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time, or any time really. Born in 17th century France she spent her life defying convention and expectation and kicking out at the world whenever it told her what to do. She was passionate, fearless and approached life in a most extraordinary way. Despite growing up at Court, Julie chose to run away and live life on the road, using the fencing and horse riding skills she learned as a child to pay her way.
Whilst her beautiful voice saw her singing in some of the greatest opera houses in Europe Julie also found the time to burn down a convent, threaten to blow out the brains of the Duchess of Luxembourg, have numerous male and female lovers, fight illegal duels, commit murder, get sentenced to death by fire, become the lover of a man she almost killed, date the most desired woman in France, and enrage the nobility at social events.
Julie’s story was adapted for the stage in 2022 by Olivia Thompson as a folk/punk actor musician musical for 5 female and non-binary performers and had 2 runs at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Kentish Town.
‘La Maupin - a masterful story of rebellion, love and unmatched bravery set against a staggering folk punk soundworld, songwriting with a profound emotional depth and transcendent quality - an assertive reclaiming of history, smack you in the face energy and pure heart - the defiant spirit of Julie d'Aubigny shines through. A stand out show.’
